Meet the Founder of EdZapp
EdZapp was founded by T.J. Chandler, an educator and business leader, seeking to transform teacher recruiting and hiring into a more effective and affordable process for schools and districts of all sizes nationwide.
An Educator
“My mom was an elementary teacher, and both my sisters teach high school today,” says T.J., who himself has taught and/or coached all levels from PreK-16. He has also delivered graduate courses in business, and professional training sessions for businesses and government agencies. He currently serves part-time as an Adjunct Professor at the Atkinson Graduate School of Management at Willamette University.
A Business Leader
T.J. founded his first company at the age of 10, and through his career has helped dozens of organizations of all shapes and sizes build value for their customers. T.J. served as the Director of Business Applications for the New York City Department of Education—where he was a leader in the Department’s multi-million dollar effort to design and develop a revolutionary new system-wide teacher recruitment system. “That project showed me that technology can actually make a difference where it matters: in the classroom where real-live teachers interact with real-live kids,” reflects T.J., who has lived in 8 different states. “But that same project also reminded me that most schools don’t have millions of dollars to spend on getting great teachers, even though the kids and parents in those communities have the same high expectations as those who live in the big cities…That’s why I started EdZapp.”
A Commitment to Public Service
T.J. has received numerous distinctions for leadership and public service, including the prestigious Harry S Truman scholarship. Among T.J.’s public sector employers and clients over the years are the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Office of the Mayor of New York, state governments of Arkansas, Washington and New Jersey, and local governments of New York City, Washington DC, Arlington County (VA), Portland (OR), and Trenton (NJ). An Eagle Scout, T.J. is still involved in the Scouting program with his 3 sons, and donates substantial time and financial resources to local welfare and global humanitarian and education efforts (such as the Perpetual Education Fund).
T.J. holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Willamette University (Oregon) and two Master’s degrees from Princeton University.
